When guests pay online on your Sociavore website — for online orders, store products, gift cards or event tickets — the payment goes through a payment provider and is deposited into your account with that provider. Sociavore works with three payment providers.
Payment providers
- Square — the most common choice. You connect your own Square account in the dashboard under Store → Ecommerce Settings → Payments. Square also lets you sync orders and menu items to your Square POS, accept Square gift cards and use Square Terminals.
- Stripe — set up by the Sociavore team. There is no Stripe button in the dashboard, so email us if you want to take payments with Stripe. Stripe is also used for food halls, where each merchant gets paid out separately.
- Other card gateways (through Spreedly) — if you already have a merchant account with another card processor, we may be able to connect it through Spreedly. This option is turned on by our team on request, and it supports card payments only.
Please check How to Connect Square to Allow Customers to Checkout and Pay Online to understand how to connect your Square account step by step.
Which provider your checkout uses
Your checkout uses one payment provider at a time. If more than one is connected to your account, checkout picks them in this order:
- Stripe
- Square
- Other gateway (Spreedly)

What guests can pay with
The payment methods your guests see at checkout depend on your payment provider:
Payment methods at checkout by payment provider
- Apple Pay and Google Pay are turned on or off in Store → Ecommerce Settings → Checkout, under Checkout Options. Apple Pay only shows in Safari on an iPhone, iPad or Mac, and Google Pay doesn't show in Firefox when you use Stripe. With Square, Apple Pay also needs your website domain verified on the Payments tab. Please check How to Add Google Pay and Apple Pay support via Square to understand the Square setup.
- With Square, Apple Pay and Google Pay are not available when Marketplace mode is on.
- Saved cards: guests who are logged in to an account can tick "Save card information for future purchases" and pick the saved card next time.
- Gift cards: guests can enter a gift card number at checkout. Square gift cards work too once you turn them on. Please check How to turn on Square Gift Cards support to understand how to accept them.
Switching payment provider
To move from Stripe to Square (or the other way round), email support@sociavore.co or message us in the chat before you switch. Our team will make sure the right provider is active and test a payment with you.
After a switch, your Sales and Fee reports keep all your past orders, but the Menu report only shows orders paid through your current provider. Please check Reports Dashboard to understand how to get Menu report data from before the switch.
